Independence Day (United States)
On July 4, 1776, in the United States, Independence Day (commemoration of July 4) is a federal holiday commemorating the declaration of independence of the United States. The Continental Congress declared that the thirteen American colonies were no longer subject (and subordinate). to the monarch of Britain and were now United States, free and independent. [1] Congress had voted for the proclamation of independence two days earlier, on July 2, but it was not declared until July 4 [1].
Independence Day is usually associated with fireworks, parades, barbecues, carnivals, fairs, picnics, concerts, baseball games, family reunions, political speeches and ceremonies, in addition to various other public events and private celebrating the history, government and traditions of the United States. Independence Day is the National Day of the United States
During the American Revolution, the legal separation of Britain's thirteen colonies in 1776 did occur on July 2, when the Second Continental Congress voted in favor of approving a resolution on independence proposed in June by Richard Henry Lee of Virginia declaring states independent of British rule [5] [6] After voting for independence, Congress turned to the Declaration of Independence, a statement explaining this decision, prepared by a committee of five people, the principal author of which was Thomas Jefferson. Congress debated and revised the wording of the Declaration and finally approved it two days later, on 4 July. A day earlier, John Adams wrote to his wife Abigail:
The second day of July 1776 will be the most memorable era in America's history. I am inclined to believe that it will be celebrated by future generations as the big birthday festival. It should be commemorated as the day of deliverance, by solemn acts of devotion to Almighty God. It must be celebrated with great fanfare, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires and illuminations, from one end of this continent, from now on and for always. [7]
Adams' prediction was shifted by two days. From the beginning, the Americans celebrated independence on July 4, the date indicated in the high-profile declaration of independence, rather than July 2, the date on which the independence resolution was approved behind closed doors by the Congress. [8]
Historians have long wondered whether members of Congress signed the declaration of independence on July 4, although Thomas Jefferson, John Adams and Benjamin Franklin all later wrote that they had signed it that day. Most historians have concluded that the Declaration was signed almost a month after its adoption on August 2, 1776, and not on July 4, as is generally believed [9] [10], [11], [12] ], [13].

Coincidentally, John Adams and Thomas Jefferson, the only signatories of the Declaration of Independence to later hold the office of President of the United States, died on the same day: July 4, 1826, the 50th anniversary of the Declaration [ 14]. Although not a signatory to the Declaration of Independence, James Monroe, another founding father elected to the presidency, also dies on July 4, 1831. He is the third president who died on the anniversary of independence. [15] Calvin Coolidge, the 30th president, was born on July 4, 1872; so far, he is the only American president to be born on Independence Day. [16]

The ships in the harbor were decked with red, white and blue streamers.
In 1778, from his headquarters in Ross Hall near New Brunswick, New Jersey, General George Washington celebrated on July 4 with a double ration of rum for his soldiers and a salute of artillery (bonfire ). On the other side of the Atlantic Ocean, ambassadors John Adams and Benjamin Franklin organized a dinner for their American compatriots in Paris, France. [18]
